App’s alert about burglary in progress leads to standoff

A phone app that notified a man of an intrusion at his Northwest Side apartment led to a brief standoff Friday when, after speaking to police, the resident found the suspect was still in his home.

At about 10:30 a.m., the resident called police from his apartment in the 1500 block of Chase Hill Boulevard saying that his security cameras had captured a man rifling through his belongings, San Antonio police said.

The resident used his camera and a phone application to tell the burglar to leave before he arrived home and called police.

While he was in his apartment, the resident believed the intruder had left, according to the report. The police arrived and documented what the resident thought had been stolen.

When the resident walked the officers out of his apartment and went back inside, he was confronted by the suspect who was holding his property, police said.

The resident ran out of the apartment and alerted police, who called in more officers. They attempted to communicate with the burglary suspect, who continued rummaging through items inside the apartment as police surrounded the unit.

After some time, the suspect voluntarily walked outside and was taken into custody, police said.

Officials did not identify the suspect as of Friday evening noting that charges were pending in the case.
