An unlikely trio led the Spurs to victory over the Magic

Gay, Lyles and Eubanks led the Spurs depleted front court.

With LaMarcus Aldridge out for the second straight game and Jakob Poeltl leaving early with a knee contusion, the Spurs relied on a team-wide offensive effort to eek out their 114-113 win over the Magic. Seven players scored in double digits, but the three players whose performances stood out the most came as a bit of a surprise.

The first was Trey Lyles, who led the way with 20 points, 9 rebounds and 4 steals in a game in which he showed off a wide range of versatility.

The other two standout performances came from the players who filled in at the Spurs’ suddenly depleted center position. Rudy Gay, who has struggled all season finding his shot, filled in at the five when Gregg Popovich went super small, scoring 19 points while hitting 4-6 from three, along with 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks.

Finally, Drew Eubanks filled in the rest of minutes at center, scoring a career high 10 points, including making his three-point attempt of the season (!), while grabbing three rebounds.

It’s probably not the trio anyone drew up leading the Spurs to victory, but a win is a win however it gets done, and it’s always encouraging to see players step up when needed. That being said, hopefully they get their two usual centers back soon.
