The Los Angeles Lakers dropped their rematch against the Golden State Warriors in the first night of NBA Cup play. But it wasn’t because of Luka Doncic.
Doncic finished Friday night’s game inside Chase Center with 37 points, seven rebounds, five assists, two blocked shots, and one steal in 37 minutes of play. Doncic did shoot just 12-of-27 from the field and 6-of-16 from three in the Lakers loss.
The Lakers got off to a hot start, leading the Warriors 40-15 early in the second quarter after Luka Doncic recorded 21 points in the opening period.
In fact, Doncic’s first quarter statline of 21 points, five assists, one steal, and one block is actually the first time in the play-by-play era that a player recorded those numbers in a single quarter of an NBA game.

But the Warriors were quick to bounce back, outscoring the Lakers 38-13 to tie the game at 53 apiece heading into halftime. The Warriors didn’t stop there, pouring it on in the second half and winning by 17 points, 112-95.
NBA Cup play factors in point differential, so it’ll be interesting to see how the Lakers bounce back from this opening loss of NBA Cup play. The Lakers and Warriors are in Group C, which includes Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs, Domantas Sabonis and the Sacramento Kings, as well as Deni Avdija and the Portland Trail Blazers.
The Lakers next game will be against the Toronto Raptors back at home on Sunday night with Kawhi Leonard not expected to play.. Their next NBA Cup game will be on Friday, November 6th against the Portland Trail Blazers with Ja Morant out due to a hamstring strain.
