Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff, Police Chief William McManus test positive for COVID-19

UPDATE: San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said that he has also tested positive for COVID-19 “earlier this week.” McManus thanked San Antonio Fire Department Chief Charles Hood and Fire Engineer Brian Lodge for staying with him throughout the “process,” but it’s not clear what that process was. MySA reached out to SAPD for clarification.

McManus says that he is only feeling mild symptoms and is recovering at home.

Bexar County Judge Nelson Wolff announced that what he thought was just a head cold turned out to be COVID-19. Wolff said he woke up with congestion on Wednesday, May 18, and when his symptoms didn’t improve, he and his wife Tracy decided to get a PCR test, according to a statement he posted to Twitter on Friday, May 20. Wolff said that both of them tested positive for COVID-19.

Wolff attended the State of the County address on Wednesday. He said that he has since reached out to everyone he came into contact with at that event. Wolff added that both him and his wife are taking the proper precautions and consulting with health authorities and medical experts.

“This latest incident underscores how persistent the virus can be,” Wolff said in the statement. “While vaccinations and boosters are not a silver bullet to infection, they will protect us from any serious illness from the virus.”

Wolff, who is close to finishing his last term as county judge, was last exposed to someone with COVID-19 in November 2020. He quarantined himself but did not test positive in the end.

Mayor Ron Nirenberg wished both Wolff and his wife well on Twitter.

COVID-19 cases have slightly ramped up this week. The number of new cases jumped from 175 cases on Tuesday, May 17, to 361 cases on Wednesday, according to data from Metro Health. There were 363 new cases reported on Thursday, May 19.
