San Antonio area in store for weekend of ‘needed rainfall’, cold front
The San Antonio area is in for a wet weekend following days of record-breaking heat.

Parts of South-Central Texas, including San Antonio, are in for a wet weekend. According to the San Antonio-Austin National Weather Service office, the area is facing a “conditional threat of strong to severe storms” starting Friday afternoon, May 20, and into the evening.
A stronger chance of storms will roll through late Saturday, May 21, as a cold front approaches. That activity will be focused on the Hill Country and Austin area, NWS says. San Antonio proper is forecast to see two to three inches of rain from Saturday to Wednesday, May 25. The city is in a “marginal” risk for severe weather Friday and Saturday.
The report adds that “multiple rounds” of rain will be likely as we move into the week. Any storms could produce large hail and damaging winds, NWS says. The heaviest rain fall is expected Monday, May 23, into Tuesday, May 24, according to the NWS situation report.
“For the most part this will be needed rainfall for drought-stricken areas, but high rainfall rates could cause minor flooding issues in the typical trouble spots or urban areas,” the report says.
The rain comes on the heels of extreme heat. Daily temperatures in San Antonio have broken record highs multiple days this week, according to a previous MySA story. The weekend cold front is also expected to bring Saharan dust with it. Temperatures are expected to drop into the low 80s on Sunday, May 22, and into the week.
