South San Antonio ISD board votes to begin removal of superintendent

South San Antonio ISD board members voted Wednesday, May 18, to begin the process of removing Superintendent Marc Puig. Here’s what you need to know.

Board members approved 3-2 at a meeting to suspend Puig without pay and propose terminating him from the Superintendent position. Board members Gilbert Rodriguez and Connie Prado voted against Puig’s removal.

Rodriguez refused to say why he voted against Puig’s removal because of the conversations they had in closed session, but told board members to “really, really think about” the closed session discussions.

The board of trustee’s decision came after Puig was suspended in December 2021 after a hot mic incident between Puig and board member Ernest Arrellano at a November 2021 meeting. It appeared that Puig was working up a deal to hire Arrellano’s brother as a consultant, according to a transcript of the conversation

Board members then opened an investigation into the conversation and its intent.
