Discourse surrounding LeBron James’s use of a Fanatics helicopter as a new member of the Philadelphia 76ers has drawn attention for various reasons. Now, journalist Pablo Torre of Pablo Torre Finds Out is questioning the helicopter’s use after owners across the league have started asking questions.
Torre isn’t alleging that James and the Philadelphia 76ers circumvented the cap to secure the services of the 4-time champion, but he reports that his sources are wondering what role former 76ers minority owner and Fanatics president Michael Rubin played in James signing with the team.
“And I just gotta point out that league sources have been wondering, I am told, if former Sixers minority owner Michael Rubin flipped LeBron, convinced him to sign with the Sixers at Fanatics Fest. And to that, of course, when we asked Sixers PR for comment, they didn’t reply. So this is not me alleging this is cap circumvention. It is though me pointing out this is pretty funny. It is a pretty funny series of apparent coincidences for a helicopter that, lots of people have been asking questions about.”
Torre also raised a red flag at trading card company Topps breaking the news of James signing with the team.
“I have never seen a big announcement like this broken by a trading card company, but here it was. The trading card platform owned by Fanatics breaks the news of LeBron signing.”
James signed a two-year, $8 million contract with the 76ers that includes a player option for the second season. James begins his 24th season on Tuesday, when the Philadelphia 76ers play the defending champion New York Knicks.
