49ers release practice squad QB ahead of trip to Colorado

The San Francisco 49ers have released practice squad quarterback Kurt Benkert ahead of the team’s trip to Colorado. The player broke the news himself this morning.

“Really enjoyed this stint in Santa Clara,” Benkert wrote.

Today is a travel day for the Niners. They will board a plane bound for the Denver area and head about an hour south to Colorado Springs. The team will start practicing at the United States Air Force Academy on Thursday to acclimate to the high altitude. On Sunday, the 49ers will head to Mexico City for their Monday night matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.

The 49ers initially signed Benkert to the practice squad on September 21. The team released the quarterback on October 12 but re-signed him to the practice squad six days later.

Benkert entered the NFL on May 1, 2018, as an undrafted free agent with the Atlanta Falcons. Over his first four NFL seasons, spent with the Falcons (2018-20) and the Green Bay Packers (2021), Benkert has appeared in one game, spending time between the two teams’ practice squads and active rosters.

Jimmy Garoppolo and Brock Purdy are the 49ers’ two remaining quarterbacks.
