San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shananhan was involved in a serious car wreck last week, the team announced Saturday.
Shanahan broke his nose, three ribs, his hand, needed over 40 stitches in his face and suffered a severe concussion in the accident, according to ESPN. The incident happened July 14 when the 45-year-old coach’s vehicle collided with another SUV by near home in Northern California, according to the report.
“San Francisco 49ers Head Coach Kyle Shanahan was involved in a car accident last week when he suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Coach Shanahan will participate in team activities on a limited basis at the start of training camp while he recovers,” the 49ers said in a statement.
“Coach Shanahan and the 49ers organization would like to sincerely thank all first responders involved for their efforts and care.

“Assistant Head Coach Chris Foerster along with team coordinators will handle head coach responsibilities during this period.”
Palo Alto Lt. Nicholas Martinez told ESPN the other driver was not injured and that drugs or alcohol were not involved. Shanahan was taken to a hospital by paramedics after the wreck and was released after spending much of the day there.
“Consistent with our standard release of information procedures in such cases, we do not release information regarding the cause of the collision or which party may have been at fault,” Martinez told ESPN.
He told the outlet that no one was cited in the collision.
The 49ers’ training camp starts on Sunday, but Shanahan will not be allowed to participate until he is cleared by doctors. The longtime coach told his assistant coaches about the accident on Tuesday, according to the report.

John Lynch, the 49ers general manager, spoke Saturday and said that while there aren’t concussion protocols for staff, he will “basically” be in the same concussion protocol players go through. Lynch said the doctors will dictate when he comes back.
“No. 1 for Kyle and the Shanahan family is getting him back right. He’s a tremendous head coach, but this is bigger than that. This is about his well-being, and, uh, we’re going to take the time necessary, and I think we’re very equipped to do that,” Lynch told reporters at a press conference.
Lynch said Shanahan has been in the building, but he will not be running the team. The general manager did say Shanahan will probably still be on the practice field despite the injuries. He just won’t be running the show.
Lynch didn’t definitively say Shanahan will be coaching in Week 1 but said that the expectation is he will be back long before the regular season begins.
Shanahan is entering his 10th season as the 49ers head coach and is widely considered one of the top coaches in the NFL. Over nine seasons, he has an 82-67 record and has led the team to the Super Bowl twice.
Shanahan is believed to be recovering well and healing at home, according to the report. The 49ers’ first game of the season is against the Los Angeles Rams Sept. 10 in Melbourne, Australia.
