Report: DeMar DeRozan will opt out of his contract if the Spurs can’t extend him

What might the summer hold for San Antonio and their star shooting guard?

DeMar DeRozan plans to opt out of his contract if the San Antonio Spurs and the four-time All-Star can’t agree to an extension this offseason, according to a report made by Yahoo! Senior NBA Insider Chris Haynes.

The news broke mid-game on the Tuesday night TNT broadcast of the Spurs versus the Mavericks, and word spread like wildfire over social media and a plethora of media outlets.

The second-year Spur denied the story after the game dispelling it as nothing more than a rumor, but the Silver and Black have much to think about as their disappointing season quickly comes to an end.

San Antonio was bounced from the playoffs by the Denver Nuggets in game seven in their first go-round with LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan at the helm, and the 2020 postseason seems like an impossible goal as the good guys sit in 12th place with a 27-36 record.

DeRozan has been silent on the topic of his NBA future since he came to Alamo City alongside Jakob Poeltl in a blockbuster trade that sent Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green to the Toronto Raptors.

It wouldn’t be surprising if the eleven-year veteran and the characteristically quiet Spurs franchise keep their business between them until a decision is made, and we shouldn’t expect to hear much from either party anytime soon.
