Xavier Arreaga joins New England via trade from Seattle

FOXBOROUGH, MA– The New England Revolution have acquired defender Xavier Arreaga via trade with the Seattle Sounders.

He will occupy a senior roster slot.

Xavier Arreaga is a 29-year-old, 6’0, 165lb defender from Guayaquil, Ecuador.

At the club level, Arreaga has played 223 career games (17,611 minutes) across Ecuador & the United States. He began his career with Halley (2012). He then left Halley for Manta F.C. (2012-15). Upon completion of the 2015 season, Arreaga left Manta for Barcelona S.C. (2016-19). He then joined the Seattle Sounders (2019-2024) originally as a Designated Player. New England will be his sixth career club.

Internationally, Arreaga has made 20 appearances for the Ecuador National Team.

In career numbers, the defender has contributed 12 career goals, 3 assists, along with 53 yellow cards and 2 red cards.

On Tuesday, April 23rd, the New England Revolution and Seattle Sounders FC agreed on a trade that would send veteran defender Xavier Arreaga to New England in exchange for a 2025 international roster slot plus $75,000 in General Allocation Money if certain performance metrics are met.

The 2019 MLS Cup and 2022 Concacaf Champions Cup Champion defender adds 100 games of MLS experience to New England’s backline.

He joined Seattle as a Designated Player in 2019 and according to the most recent MLSPA Salary Guide, is making $750,000.

Head coach Caleb Porter stated, “We are pleased to welcome Xavier Arreaga to the Revolution to continue his decorated MLS career. Xavier has been a key part of title-winning teams in Seattle, both in our league and at the continental level,” Revolution Sporting Director Curt Onalfo said. “His arrival adds important reinforcement to our defensive unit for the rest of this season and beyond.”

“Xavier will bring a calm and composure to our backline with his quality in possession and ability to start our attack,” Head Coach Caleb Porter added. “Defensively, he is a smart player who reads the game extremely well and will complement our other defenders. I really like his track record of winning trophies in Ecuador and in MLS, and his international experience will add leadership and confidence to our locker room.”
