Corpus Christi police are investigating what happened between a couple that led to a shooting that sent both to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Police say they arrived at a Whataburger at 2424 Baldwin Blvd., Corpus Christi, TX 78405, around 7:38 a.m., on Tuesday, February 14, Valentine’s Day, to find a man and a woman with gunshot wounds, Corpus Christi news station KRIS 6 reports

The investigators say the man shot the woman in her mid-20s and then turned the gun on himself.

“Those two were in a relationship, so it’s not a random act of violence,” Corpus Christi Police Lt. Michael Pena told KRIS 6.

Pena told another Corpus Christi news station, KIII, the man and woman were waiting in line at the Whataburger when the man shot his girlfriend.

Police applied a tourniquet to the woman’s injury when they arrived. Both the man and woman were sent to the hospital with “severe, life-threatening injuries,” KRIS 6 reports. KIII reports the man had more serious injuries than the woman.

The man and woman were still alive as of 11:35 a.m. on Tuesday but their current status is not known. KIII reports that the shooting was a domestic violence incident but police didn’t release a motive behind the shooting.
