Will the Cowboys trade for a wide receiver?

The Cowboys have already made a trade for impact defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins. It appears they may not be done yet. The question is now “Could the Cowboys trade for a wide receiver? This should come as no surprise as the team has lacked production from the wide receiver position this season.

When asked if the Cowboys should be considered a “buyer” before the November 1st trade deadline, owner Jerry Jones noted that if a Deion Sanders-like player came available that “I’ll grab the phone.”

WILL THE COWBOYS TRADE FOR A WIDE RECEIVER?

Here are the wide receivers who are linked to the Cowboys.

D.J. Moore

The Carolina Panthers are in a full rebuild after sending star running back Christian McCaffrey packing. Moore is signed through the 2025 season and has over 19 million in guaranteed money for next season. The Cowboys were high on Moore back in the 2018 draft and even had him in for a pre-draft visit.

Moore is just 25 years old and has three 1000-yard seasons. If the Cowboys can get Carolina to absorb some of Moore’s contract, this deal makes sense for both sides.

ELIJAH MOORE

If the Cowboys trade for a wide receiver, getting one with upside on a cheap contract would be wise move. Elijah Moore has expressed unhappiness in New York saying in a tweet, “If I say what I really wanna say…I’ll be the selfish guy…we winning. Grateful! Huge blessing! All I ever wanted. Butter sweet for me em but I’ll be solid. So I’ll just stay quiet. Just know I don’t understand either.”

This comes after seeing exactly zero targets in a big win over the Green Bay Packers on October 16th. Moore broke out late last season after being selected in the second round of the 2021 draft. He has the ability to play across the formation and would give Dak Prescott a solid possesion receiver.

JERRY JEUDY

Going into the 2020 draft, the talented wide receiver was thought to be the best route-runner of his class. Jeudy has made some splash plays, but has not had sustained success due to poor quarterback play. Despite having the likes of Drew Lock, Jeff Driskel, Teddy Bridgewater, and now Russell Wilson, he has collected three 100-yard games in his young career. He is 23 years old and possesses the breakaway speed to give the Dallas offense something it lacks.

Jeudy has one year left on his rookie contract so the Cowboys could get a guy with a chip on his shoulder on the cheap for around 25 games.

CHASE CLAYPOOL

Chase Claypool’s measurables could be enough to entice the Cowboys to trade for a wide receiver. He stands six feet four inches tall and weighed 238 pounds at combine. He may have shown the Cowboys shades of Dez Bryant as he tore up the league to the tune of nine touchdowns and nearly 900 yards in his rookie season.

This is another wide receiver on a rookie contract who could give the Cowboys a dynamic playmaker that can win the jump ball.

The quarterback carousel in Pittsburgh has likely stunted his development but a get-together with an established QB1 could elevate Claypool’s game.

HONORABLE MENTION- BRANDIN COOKS

The Houston Texans could look to unload Brandin Cooks and his big contract. If the Cowboys trade for a wide receiver, this probably won’t be the move, but is worth mentioning.

The aforementioned finacial situation includes 36 million in gurantees that was signed this past offseason.

Brandin Cooks is one of the most underrated wide receiver in the league. He has totaled six 1000-yard seasons in eight seasons played and has done so on four teams. He is a little older than the wide receivers previously mentioned, but tops them all in pedigree.

SHOULD THE COWBOYS TRADE FOR A WIDE RECEIVER?

The Cowboys should absolutely be looking to trade for a wide receiver. The Cowboys rank 28th in the league in receptions of more than 20 yards and 26th in receiving first downs. CeeDee Lamb has made progress toward being a top-tier wide receiver but the Cowboys have gotten nothing from newly-paid outside receiver Michael Gallup in 2022. Noah Brown has had some moments but a breakout coming in his fifth season seems unlikely.

This defense is clearly built to take this team deep into the playoffs. The running game is humming with the 1-2 punch of Ezekiel Elliott and Tony Pollard. If the Cowboys trade for a wide receiver at the deadline, it will strengthen the last remaining weakness on what could be a Super Bowl roster.
