Why Chelsea’s Kai Havertz is absent from Germany’s squad to face Armenia

For any Chelsea supporters unsure of the reasoning behind Kai Havertz’s absence from the German squad to face Armenia this evening, an explanation has been forthcoming courtesy of Hansi Flick.

Germans eyeing three points

Die Mannschaft are set to return to action shortly.

In the nation’s latest qualifier for next year’s Qatar World Cup, Germany will play host to Armenia, in a 7.45pm kick-off.

The clash marks a crucial one for Flick’s men, on the back of a shock defeat at home to North Macedonia earlier this year.

In turn, it is Armenia who currently sit top of the Group J table, with the Germans in 2nd, and North Macedonia just a further point back in third.

As such, it goes without saying that a 2nd successive 3-point haul, on the back of a 2-o downing of Liechtenstein earlier this week, is very much on the menu for this evening’s hosts at the Mercedes-Benz Arena.

‘Flu-like infection’

It therefore no doubt came as a blow for all supporters of Die Mannschaft when, upon the country’s starting XI to face Armenia being unveiled, one of the nation’s key performers was nowhere to be seen.

The player in question? Kai Havertz.

Not only has the Chelsea talent missed out on a spot in Germany’s starting line-up this evening, but Havertz is nowhere to be seen amongst the substitutes, either:

So, where exactly is the gifted attacker?

Well, speaking ahead of his side’s latest outing, Hansi Flick this evening confirmed that Havertz had emerged as a late doubt to feature, after picking up an unspecified illness:

‘Kai Havertz has a mild flu-like infection, but it’s not that bad. We still have to see if he can train.’
