What we learned from this Monday’s training

With the aim of getting miles into the legs, Bruno Fernandes was one of those building his stamina after the short break that followed his international exertions with Portugal. A short, sharp running drill clearly looked designed to increase the workload gently ahead of what was to come.

The coaching staff were keen to pass on instructions to a group that contained the likes of Anthony Elanga, Eric Bailly, Facundo Pellistri and Fred, while Donny van de Beek appeared to be fully embracing the short passing exercise with gusto. Coaches watched on with a stopwatch, again emphasising the attention to detail and determination to keep a high tempo.

The fresh faces got a first taste of the drill on show last week, a blur of movement and passing – with left foot and then right foot – and there was plenty of encouragement from the coaches on this front.
