West Ham have pulled out of a £15million move for Chelsea left-back Emerson Palmieri after failing to agree personal terms.

The Hammers are not willing to meet the 28-year-old’s wage demands and while there is a chance they could revisit the issue before the window shuts, they are now looking at other targets.

David Moyes is keen to provide competition for Aaron Cresswell, who turns 33 later this year and is currently the only natural left-back in the squad.

Right-back Ben Johnson did deputise on the opposite flank last season but he has been playing in the centre of defence this season such is the extent of West Ham’s current injury crisis.

The Hammers have completed the signing of centre-back Thilo Kehrer from PSG to ease the burden while Craig Dawson, Angelo Ogbonna and Nayef Aguerd are sidelined.

Chelsea are still keen to sell Emerson this summer as he is not in Thomas Tuchel’s plans. While the Italian international was given opportunities in pre-season, he has not featured in the matchday squad for either of the Blues’ first two Premier League fixtures.

Ben Chilwell and new arrival Marc Cucurella will battle it out for a starting spot at left wing-back this season, meaning there is no room for Emerson.

The 28-year-old, who spent the 2021-22 campaign on loan at Ligue 1 side Lyon, has a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2024.

He has made 71 appearances for Chelsea since signing from Roma in 2018, but has not started a league game for the club since December 2020.

Meanwhile, Club Brugge are to offer captain Hans Vanaken a new contract in a bid to stave off West Ham’s interest.
