An altogether bizarre scene unfolded in France this evening, during the showdown between Marseille and Paris Saint-Germain.

Spoils shared

The latest edition of Le Classique played out a short time ago.

After Spanish football’s two biggest clubs did battle earlier in the day, their equivalents from France did likewise on Sunday night, at the Stade Velodrome.

PSG headed into proceedings aiming to extend their advantage at the Ligue 1 summit to a hefty nine points, though hosts Marseille were aware that a victory of their own would guide them to within seven points of Mauricio Pochettino’s side.

When all was said and done, however, a typically hard-fought affair played out into a 0-0 stalemate.

The evening’s highlights included a pair of disallowed goals over the course of the first-half, along with Achraf Hakimi’s dismissal shortly after the interval.

Ultimately, though, neither of the French giants were able to conjure up the one moment of quality required to steal the Classique headlines.

Messi madness

Instead, as outlined above, the major talking point stemming from the action on Sunday night was brought about by the actions of one of the supporters in attendance.

During the 2nd-half of play, Lionel Messi picked the ball up from deep, before embarking on a trademark run towards the edge of the Marseille box.

Just as he approached the area in which the Argentine so often makes the difference, however, Messi was halted in his tracks.

No, not by an opposing defender…

Nor by the referee’s whistle.

Instead, amid frankly ridiculous scenes, PSG’s star man was forced to bring his attacking efforts to an end, after being approached from behind by a fan who had somehow managed to make his way onto the pitch.

Footage of the incident, which is no doubt set to spark a debate regarding the safety of players at the Stade Velodrome, can be seen below:
