Video: Arteta left furious after Spaniard claims words he ‘never said’ were reported

Arsenal’s improved attitude

It was an impressive 3 points won at Chelsea last night for the Gunners.

Arsenal took the lead in comedic fashion after a mindless back pass from Jorginho led to Emile Smith-Rowe’s opening goal.

The goalscorer explained that the strike was more than just a mistake and that the pressing the team showed excellently was present due to work on the training pitch.

The win moved Arsenal above Everton into 8th despite the Toffees having played two games less than their North London opponents.

Arteta left furious

Despite the win, Mikel Arteta was not a happy man after the final whistle.

He took the opportunity speaking with Sky Sports to berate the media who he claims reported words he never said.

“Nothing is broken inside [the club]. I don’t know how they want to try from the outside. They try to put things on me that I never said,” said Arteta.

“You can see the spirit of the team from the first minute. You can never doubt the efforts.

“I said if I don’t get 120% off each player it’s my fault and responsibility. It wasn’t like this in the press. I’m so annoyed by that.

“My players, I will defend them from everybody for the rest of the time I’m here. They don’t deserve that.”

Regarding what the Spaniard could have been talking about was not made clear. However, a press conference ahead of the Chelsea game saw videos published showing Arteta speaking about his team, seemingly indicating he wasn’t happy with the output with all of them.

His reaction after Chelsea however appears to show this is not what he meant whatsoever. Perhaps he was referencing that not all the players had performed to the level he knows they are capable of rather than that they had not applied the effort they should have.

Such an open answer to interpret was difficult to disagree with suggestions his words were in fact about effort and not as he seemingly intended them.
