Update reveals if Giants will sign Odell Beckham Jr.

At least one New York team apparently won’t be going out of the way to win the signature of free agent wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. this spring.

ESPN’s Jordan Raanan reported on Friday that “it’s a long shot” the New York Giants will enjoy a reunion with Beckham ahead of the 2023 season.

Earlier in the week, Giants co-owner John Mara said at the annual league meetings that he hadn’t “closed the door on” re-signing Beckham if general manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll were in favor of acquiring the 30-year-old. Daboll reportedly texted with Beckham “a couple times this offseason” but wouldn’t reveal the nature of those messages.

“The Giants haven’t been willing to pay Beckham anywhere near what he’s asking or will command,” Raanan continued. “Their chances of landing him are slim to none, according to one source with knowledge of the situation.”

Interestingly, the New York Jets were named “the most likely landing spot” for Beckham on Thursday. It’s believed he wants to play alongside Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers assuming the Packers and Jets work out a trade regarding the future Hall of Famer at some point.

Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated reported Thursday that Beckham was “looking for something in the neighborhood of $15M per year” via his next contract. It’s unclear if the Jets or any other club will match that asking price considering OBJ hasn’t played a down of meaningful football since he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee during Super Bowl LVI in February 2022.

The Giants originally drafted Beckham with overall pick No. 12 of the 2014 NFL Draft, and he made Pro Bowl squads in each of his first three seasons. His first, and possibly only, Big Blue tenure ended when former general manager Dave Gettleman traded the receiver to the Cleveland Browns in March 2019.

Meanwhile, the Giants have added tight end Darren Waller and wide receivers Parris Campbell,
Jamison Crowder and Jeff Smith this offseason.
