Updated 8:26 am CDT, Monday, May 11, 2020

One person was hospitalized after a gas line explosion started a fire at an East Side duplex Sunday night.

Crews were called to the 1700 block of E. Highland Boulevard just after 9:30 p.m. after residents heard the sound of an “explosion” that rattled the neighborhood, a SAFD spokesman said. When firefighters arrived, they found the building engulfed in flames, officials at the scene said.

Firefighters knocked down the fire quickly, but the building suffered damage and a patio had partially collapsed. A portion of the neighboring home was also affected, but no one was harmed.

Two neighbors who live across the street pulled a man out of the one of the duplexes after it had caught on fire, SAFD said. The man was transported to the hospital with extensive burns.

CPS had to dig up the gas line to cap it and a small gas leak was allowed to burn while waiting on the excavation to prevent a larger gas leak.

Arson investigators were on the scene Sunday nigh to determine its cause.
