U.S. Marshals and troopers with the Texas Department of Public Safety took down a fugitive on Friday afternoon, March 24, who was found at a downtown San Antonio hotel. Sergeant Kenny Mata with DPS said at a Friday press conference that law enforcement shot and killed a fugitive out of New Braunfels at the DoubleTree Hotel at 502 W Cesar E. Chavez Blvd.

The 46-year-old white man was pronounced dead at the scene, Mata said. The man, whose identity was not provided at this time, was wanted in connection with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon by the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force with the U.S. Marshals.

Mata said that the man was confronted in the parking garage at the DoubleTree but he was unaware which floor of the garage the shooting occurred. Tim Anderson, supervisor for the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force with the U.S. Marshal’s Office, said that law enforcement tried to arrest the fugitive and that’s when shots were fired. He said that there were no other individuals in the parking garage except for law enforcement.

“As far as we know, what happens was an altercation incident up there,” Anderson said. “Shots were fired and the wanted person is deceased.”

Mata didn’t say which members of law enforcement shot the man or if the man brandished any kind of weapon or resisted arrest, saying that the investigation is ongoing. U.S. Marshals called on DPS Troopers to help investigate. Texas Rangers have now taken over the investigation of the shooting, according to Anderson.

Mata said that guests are free to leave the hotel but can’t enter the second or third floors of the parking garage.
