Trump beats Biden in general election, dominates GOP field, poll shows

Former President Trump continues to dominate the Republican primary field and would beat President Biden in a general election, according to a new poll.

If the 2024 Republican presidential primary were held today, Trump would win with 52% of voters.

His nearest rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis would lag 40 points behind with just 12%, while Vivek Ramaswamy, a biopharmaceutical entrepreneur, rounded out the top three with 10% support, according to the Harvard-Harris poll released Friday.

Trump would beat Biden in a head-to-head matchup by a margin of 45 to 40 percent — with a crucial 16% of voters undecided.

His margin over Vice President Harris would be an even more yawning 47 to 38 percent.

The survey revealed wide discontentment with both major party candidates, however, with 70% of voters hungry for another option.

DeSantis remained the overall GOP favorite should Trump decide to get out of the race, the survey showed.

The findings also show a full 68% of Americans said they felt President Biden, 80, is “showing he is too old to be president.”

A further 64% of those polled said he should not seek a second term. Trump is 77.

Among election issues, inflation and the economy remained an overriding concern among voters.

More than 3 out of 4 said they have been impacted by inflation.

Six out of 10 cited the economy or inflation as their primary issue.

The survey also found the mood of the country remained pessimistic.

Less than three in ten voters believe the country is on the “right track.”

The poll was conducted July 19-20 and surveyed 2,068 registered voters.
