Tranmere Rovers will host Newcastle United and Bolton Wanderers will play Aston Villa in the pick of the second round ties of this season’s Carabao Cup.

The draw, which was made on Wednesday evening, also sees Crawley Town host Fulham, Everton making the trip to Fleetwood Town and last season’s National League champions Stockport County host Leicester City

The second round is still spilt into North and South sections and only Premier League teams free of European competition enter at this stage.

Bolton’s game with Aston Villa will bring back memories of the sides cup meetings of the 2000s, when they clashed in the semi-final of the 2004 League Cup and the FA Cup semi-final in 2000. Both occasions Villa went through.

Other second round highlights include Southampton travelling to Cambridge United, Colchester United hosting Brentford and Bradford City boss Mark Hughes welcoming old side Blackburn Rovers to Valley Parade.

Other sides involving Premier League teams sees Brighton travel to Forest Green Rovers, Crystal Palace travel to Oxford United, Wolves welcome Preston to Molineux, Nottingham Forest head to Blundell Park to face Grimsby and Jesse Marsch’s Leeds prepare for a Yorkshire derby against Barnsley.

Liverpool are the current Carabao Cup holders after they beat Chelsea 11-10 on penalties after a goalless draw at Wembley in February’s final.

The remaining seven Premier League teams – who are involved in European competition – will enter this competition from the third round.
