Timo Werner turned provider to show there’s more to his game than goals but a late Paderborn equaliser denied 10-man RB Leipzig a crucial victory.

The Chelsea-bound forward unselfishly set up Leipzig’s opening goal, getting away down the left to provide a perfect cut-back for Patrik Schick to slot in his tenth goal of the season.    

But Dayot Upamecano’s red card just before half-time would prove to be costly as the visitors were rewarded for their perseverance with an unlikely point.

Leipzig dominated the early stages with Werner’s threatening runs causing problems for the away side. 

Paderborn had little to cheer about in the first 45 minutes but Klaus Gjasula did set a joint Bundesliga record for yellow cards, picking up his sixteenth booking of the season for clattering into Nordi Mukiele.

But the visitors were given a lifeline just before half-time when centre-back Upamecano was sent off for kicking the ball away.

The defender had already been booked earlier in the half and was given his marching orders for reacting to the referee’s decision to award a free-kick against him.

Paderborn were able to make the extra man count, albeit not until the final stages.

Werner had cut a lone figure in the Leipzig attack during the second half but showed willingness to chase down the Paderbon defence and his hard work was almost rewarded when he intercepted a back pass from left-back Jamilu Collins and threaded the ball through the legs of the on-rushing Zingerle.

The striker had largely an open goal to aim at but with two defenders rushing back, could only send his effort wide of the post. 

The result means Julian Nagelsmann’s side stay third and extended their lead over Borussia Monchengladbach to three points after they were defeated by Freiburg on Friday.
