Timo Werner explains new Chelsea role under Thomas Tuchel/Provides update on fitness
Chelsea star Timo Werner has, on Monday, provided an insight into the difference in his role under Thomas Tuchel, compared to that asked of him by Frank Lampard, on the back of the Blues’ win over Sheffield United.
Pensioners march on
Chelsea made the trip to Bramall Lane 24 hours ago, for a showdown with Chris Wilder’s Blades.
The visitors of course headed into proceedings having enjoyed a fine start to life under the guidance of new boss Tuchel, notching a trio of clean sheets en route to 7 points from an available 9 in the Premier League.
And, when all was said and done on Sunday, such fine form continued.
A hard-fought affair in Sheffield eventually saw the Londoners emerge on the right side of a 2-1 scoreline.
After Mason Mount’s first-half strike was cancelled out via a shocking Antonio Rudiger own goal, Jorginho stepped up to slot away the game’s winning goal from the penalty spot just shy of the hour mark.

‘Very good for me’
Whilst, in the end, it was unsurprisingly Mason Mount and Jorginho who stole the headlines in bagging the crucial goals on Sunday night, another of Chelsea’s stars actually played a direct hand in both of the visitors’ strikes.
The player in question? Timo Werner.
The big-money summer arrival at Stamford Bridge has of course been singled out for heavy criticism of late, amid a lengthy fruitless streak in front of goal.
At Bramall Lane, though, Werner reminded fans of his ability to contribute elsewhere, with the former RB Leipzig man’s pace and directness having caused Sheffield United’s backline all sorts of problems.
In turn, he was rewarded with the Man of the Match accolade post-match:

Not only that, but, as outlined above, Werner’s impressive exploits on Sunday also saw the German drawn on whether his improved form could have something to do with the arrival of Thomas Tuchel on the bench in west London.
And he went on to suggest as much, highlighting the difference in the role asked of him by his fellow countryman, compared to that performed under Frank Lampard:
‘Every manager is different in how he wants us to play,’ Werner told Chelsea’s official website. ‘He gives us a lot of ideas. Now I play as a left number 10, not a left winger, so I have more space for my runs in the middle and can play behind a striker, or with a number 10 behind me as a second striker. So it’s very good for me and I think there were also good moves from the manager in the last two wins.’
Elsewhere, Werner provided an update on his fitness, after the 24-year-old was spotted receiving treatment on the bench last night, having made way for N’Golo Kante 15 minutes from time:
‘I got a dead leg – that’s what you call it in England I think – it was at the penalty. The 10 or 15 minutes after were hard, so I told the manager he should take me off because it was a tight game and in the end it’s better to have 11 fit players on the pitch than 10-and-a-half.’
‘It’s very good for me.’
