‘Time To Let Him Go’ ‘He’s Not Good Enough’ City Fans Criticise Guardiola Favourite For His Displays This Season
Despite putting in a very good display against Fulham at the weekend, Manchester City midfielder Rodri is not exactly winning over many fans, going by comments on social media.
The Athletic‘s City correspondent Sam Lee released a comparison chart of the Spaniard’s performances this season and last campaign, which show notable dropoffs in some areas.
Even with his drop in form, manager Pep Guardiola has used Rodri regularly, with the 24-year-old having only failed to start in one game this season. Supporters on Twitter are not sure why he is one of the City manager’s favourite players:
Time to let him go and sign a quicker dm

He’s not good enough for us, it just confirms what you see on the eye test.

He need to improve his defensive numbers

I think he has been much improved lately, although I’m not sure he is a great fit for us. Not particularly mobile, not great at stopping counters, a good but not great passer, not particularly quick with the ball.

I think that he should be sold but it will be hard to find a buyer.

Rodri is no Fernandinho and will never be. If pep is pleased with his work and sees improvements, who the hell are you to say otherwise? #harbingerofnegativity . Oh I see the derby is next Saturday! 😂so the steady diet of negative pieces is standard operating procedure.

He’s just mediocre. There is no painting this any other way. He’s not a bad player, he’s just not very good, and is constantly shown up (unless it’s against a really poor team) by the more talented others. He makes Gundogan (who IS excellent) look like Iniesta.

Rodri is decent but not at city level. He is no where near a £70 player. He doesn’t really help the team in the offensive play. I don’t really know what he is good at as he doesn’t protect our backline too. Let’s agree he is good but not at the level of city

The biggest criticism levelled at Rodri is his lack of pace. It isn’t an attribute he can improve and it remains to be seen whether Guardiola continues to play him regularly despite his obvious shortcomings.
With four clean sheets in a row in all competitions, it would certainly be harsh to drop him currently and we shall see how he fares in the Manchester derby this weekend.
