Three family members arrested in connection with botched drug deal that left a 24-year-old man dead

Three members of the same family were arrested Wednesday in connection with a drug deal gone bad that left a 24-year-old man dead, according to an arrest affidavit.

Lane Devon Wootan, 23, his mother Jennifer Blankenship, 46, and her husband William Blankenship, 59, were all charged with murder for their alleged involvement in the death of Josh Fowler on Tuesday, the affidavit said.

Bexar County deputies said Fowler was at a home in the 6800 block of East Loop 1604 around 11 p.m. Tuesday with his stepfather and a second witness when they heard a car pull up outside. Fowler and his stepfather ran outside the house to find Wootan and the Blankenships standing in the backyard with various firearms.

The two Blankenships both had handguns while Wootan was carrying an AR-15 rifle, the affidavit said. William Blankenship was also holding two clubs, according to the affidavit.

Fowler and Wootan began to fight over the AR-15 rifle and at one point William Blankenship gave Wootan one of the clubs to help, the affidavit said.

As the two continued fighting, Fowler’s stepfather said he heard two gunshots, telling police is sounded like one shot came from a rifle and the other from a handgun, the affidavit continued. The affidavit did not specify who fired the fatal shots.

When the stepfather ran across the yard, Fowler was on the ground screaming with a gunshot wound to his abdomen.

Wootan told the stepfather not to call the police or “he is dead,” before the three suspects fled from the scene, according to the affidavit.

Fowler was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Deputies at the scene said the incident stemmed from a botched drug deal.

The three suspects were arrested Wednesday night. William Blankenship’s bail was set at $250,000 bond and Jennifer Blankenship at $150,000. Wootan’s is $300,000.
