Three arrested after officer-involved shooting on the West Side

A minor was shot by police Saturday after police officers were fired on in a West Side neighborhood, police chief William McManus said.

Three individuals were arrested. Police said the group is suspected in a series of five or six other robberies.

The incident began Saturday afternoon when police were initially investigating a robbery at the CVS on Culebra Road and Northwest 24th Street. While searching for suspects in the robbery, police came across a “completely unrelated group” of three people in a gray SUV, McManus said.

An officer saw a gun in the vehicle and followed the three suspects to the neighborhood near Lombrano Street and North Hamilton Avenue. The three fled on foot, and one suspect shot at the officers, McManus said. One police officer fired back, striking the suspect in the leg.

It was unclear if the three suspects were involved in the earlier CVS robbery. Police did not have information on the suspect who robbed the CVS.

“What we have here, as far as we know right now, is an unrelated matter to that CVS robbery,” McManus said.

The SUV the three suspects were driving in had been carjacked a few days earlier, McManus said.

The officer who shot the suspect has 12 years of experience in the department.
