‘The Words He Told Me Made Me Mad’ Bruno Fernandes Speaks Out On Guardiola Confrontation
Manchester United midfielder Bruno Fernandes was pictured shushing Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola during the Manchester derby, and responding to claims he disrespected the Spaniard, the Portuguese midfielder explained that he was angry with what something the City boss had said to him:
“I talked about this with some friends and some people think ‘Pep won everything, who is Bruno to diss him?’ But I think it is about respect.”
“Now, I think outside of the pitch I don’t do this again if I am on the pitch now. But, at that moment the words he told me made me mad, and on the pitch, I am a little bit nervous, it is the kind of player I am.”
“I have respect for Pep and what he won, and what he did for football because he changed some mentalities in football. But, at that moment he didn’t deserve my respect at that moment on the pitch.”
The derby can be an intense occasion, especially during the closing stages of a narrow contest. It was 1-0 at the time and with the clock running down, Guardiola can be forgiven for having had a choice word or two to say.
Fernandes’s decision to make the shushing gesture in response was not exactly the most extreme reaction but it has understandably antagonised some.
City fans would be delighted if they can silence Fernandes instead by getting a win in the next clash between the two sides.
With the Coronavirus outbreak, though, nobody knows when that will be, but there will likely be an extra edge to proceedings.
