The Spurs unveil plans for state-of-the-art training facility and community center in San Antonio

For those who continue to believe that there are plans to move the Spurs away from San Antonio — be it simply up the road to or nearer to Austin (bad idea for IH-35 traffic, which is constantly crippled regardless of the time or day), or a frequently debunked conspiracy theory that the younger Holt generation is trying to sell off their father’s team — rest assured: it’s not happening any time soon.

That’s because Spurs Sports & Entertainment just presented its plans for the Human Performance Center to the Bexar County Commissioner’s office, which would be a new, state-of-the-art training complex, complete with medical and research offices, retail, park and community space located near the Shops at La Cantera and Six Flags Fiesta Texas off Loop 1604 and IH-10 on the far Northwest side. Per RJ Martinez of KSAT 12:

In total, the campus will be more than 504,000 square feet with the total cost of the project an estimated $510.8 million, according to the presentation made Tuesday at commissioner’s court.

The site is expected to employ more than 1,700 full-time employees, with the expectation it will be used 365 days a year for community gatherings and events.

Spurs officials tell KSAT the project will be primarily funded by private investors. The development is expected to break ground this October.

The Spurs Performance Center (the training facility) is expected to be one of the best in all professional sports, so again, those who think the Spurs are falling behind as a small market team can rest assured that they’re putting in the effort to stay ahead, and they have the private backup to do so with little to no assistance from the tax payers. That’s huge news for the city itself and a good recruiting tool for future free agents.
