The Spurs have officially signed Jock Landale

Another puzzle piece had fallen into place for the Spurs’ still cluttered roster, and that is the signing of Australian center Jock Landale, who has reportedly agreed to a two-year deal worth the minimum, with only the 2021-22 season guaranteed.

According to HoopsRumors, the minimum for free agents with zero years of NBA experience this season is worth about $925k. Should the Spurs hold on to Landale next season, his salary will rise to at least $1.56 million, depending on the contract terms. That sounds like quite the deal for a player who could instantly contribute, and it also means they still have the full room exception to use this offseason, which is worth $4.91 million and will likely go in part, if not entirely to Bryn Forbes.

The Spurs also still have Keita Bates-Diop’s cap hold, although he will presumably be signing another two-way contract. That said, even when taking him and Joe Wieskamp off the table as two-ways, the Spurs are still looking at 17 guaranteed contracts once Forbes is signed, which means something will have to give. Different sites give different dates ranging from August 18 to the 20th (today) in terms of when the Spurs could have waived Drew Eubanks’ partially guaranteed contract, but regardless that doesn’t appear to be in the plans.

Other names to watch for candidates to potentially be waived are Al-Farouq Aminu and Chandler Hutchinson, both acquired via trade, or maybe another trade is in the mix. (Some may hate to see it, but the Ben Simmons rumors continue to persist. Also, for the record, at least with regards to Aminu and Thaddeus Young, the Spurs do not have to wait 60 days to either trade or waive them since they were traded into the team’s cap space for another Spurs player, not acquired via free agency.)
