The latest on Steve Bruce’s Newcastle future following Tottenham defeat

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has, on Sunday evening, provided a fresh insight into his future with the club.

Kane amongst the goals

Bruce of course led his troops back into action a short time ago.

In their first outing on the back of the monumental changing of hands at ownership level, the Magpies welcomed Tottenham to St. James’ Park, for a Premier League showdown.

When the 90 minutes were said and done, however, to say that the Newcastle faithful were brought firmly back down to earth would be something of an understatement.

The hosts did actually take the lead on the day, inside two minutes no less, but a rampant Spurs soon roared back.

Tanguy Ndombele was first on target for Nuno’s men, levelling things up courtesy of a pinpoint effort from just inside the area:

Then, after Harry Kane put Spurs in front with a fine finish of his own, Newcastle’s hopes of a comeback were dealt a hammer blow on the stroke of the interval, when Heung-min Son slotted home from close range.

And, despite a late Eric Dier own goal, the visitors ultimately held on, to deal all associated with the Magpies something of a reality check.

‘Will carry on…’

In turn, on the back of another difficult afternoon for not only the club, but the Newcastle boss on a personal level, too (he was dealt a deserved defeat on his 1000th game in the dugout), Bruce, post-match, was inevitably drawn on his future.

The week since the Saudi takeover at the club has seen a whole host of tacticians tipped to take up the reins at St. James’, amid the widespread assumption that Bruce’s days are very much numbered.

Speaking to the media this evening, though, the man in charge of the Toon remained defiant, assuring that, so long as he does not hear from the club’s owners, he will ‘carry on as best I can’:

‘That is for other people to decide. Ever since I have walked into this club of ours it is difficult. I knew how difficult it was going to be with the frustrations. I will carry on as best I can until I hear otherwise.’

‘The owners have conducted themselves respectfully since they came in. As long as I hear otherwise, I will go into work tomorrow.’
