Texas politicians react to Donald Trump’s arrest, 34 felony charges

Former President Donald Trump was arraigned in a Manhattan district court Tuesday, April 4, and Texas politicians on both sides of the aisle are weighing in on social media. Reactions range from praise over the prosecution of Trump’s alleged crimes to claims that the dozens of felony counts are a ploy from the “left” to take down the former president.

Trump pleaded not guilty to a total of 34 felony counts related to falsifying business documents associated with alleged hush money paid to sex worker and porn actor Stormy Daniels. Trump turned himself in on Tuesday, making history as the first time former president indicted in the U.S.

A statement from Democratic San Antonio Congressman Greg Casar’s office began with “Good.”

“May some justice finally be served for the Grifter in Chief, and may all the people harmed, disrespected, and misrepresented by his time in office feel some semblance of accountability,” Casar said in a statement.

Texas GOP Senator Ted Cruz was far less praising of the U.S. justice system, calling the Tuesday’s arraignment a “mockery of the rule of law” and a “dark day” for the country.

Rep. Joaquin Castro, another San Antonio congressman, wrote on Twitter Tuesday that allowing a former president to break the law sets the precedent for future presidents to do the same, saying, “May justice be served.”

He praised Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg for prosecuting the case against Trump.

“While the arraignment of a former president is unprecedented, the Manhattan district attorney has shown great courage in holding Donald Trump accountable,” Castro said in the statement.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton posted a photo of him and Trump to Twitter, saying that he stands with Trump.

“The left’s weaponization of the justice system to go after Trump, shows there is no limit, they’ll use it to go after the mom at school board meetings or anyone with conservative values,” Paxton said in the tweet.
