A Texas man was arrested on Wednesday, August 31, after his 4-year-old child took a loaded gun to school. The discovery of the firearm prompted a lock down at JFK Elementary in West Oso ISD, the school district said in a statement. Police did not clarify what type of gun was brought to the school.

Corpus Christi police said an off-duty officer was called in after the firearm was discovered around 9:15 a.m. and was able to secure the weapon without incident. Police said officers went to the child’s home to investigate and identified the child’s parents as the owner of the gun. Paul Torres, 30, was arrested and charged with making a firearm accessible to children and endangering a child.

“While we do not believe that students and staff were in any kind of imminent danger, as a precaution the campus had increased police presence and maintained a higher level of security at the school until the Corpus Christi Police Department gave us an ‘all clear’ at 10:30 a.m.,” a letter to parents from West Oso ISD Superintendent Conrado Garcia said.

Corpus Christi police urge parents to safely store firearms and remain diligent in keeping them secure.

Earlier this week, a 16-year-old male student was arrested for making shooting threats against Lockhart High School. Three female students were arrested the following day. The unidentified minor students may face charges of felony terroristic threat charges after reportedly scrawling the threat in an on-campus girl’s bathroom.
