Texans were going to draft Kellen Mond one spot after Vikings did?

The Houston Texans wanted Kellen Mond. They ended up with Davis Mills.

Mond’s father, Kevin, told Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press that the Texans were ready to select his son with the 67th overall pick in the draft. However, the Minnesota Vikings selected him one pick earlier.

“[There was a] phone call from his agent, text message, and the agent said, ‘Hey, the Houston Texans are getting ready to select [Kellen] at pick 67,'” Kevin Mond said. “So, we’re sitting on the couch and [Kellen] gets the phone call a couple of minutes later and it’s a team. . . . Then, when he hung up the phone, he goes, ‘I’m going to the Vikings.’ The Texans had already told his agent they’re getting ready to take him at pick 67. The Vikings happened to have the pick 66.”

Mond’s father believes his son is happy in Minnesota, adding that he might have been rushed into the starting job in Houston based on how things are going with Deshaun Watson.

With Watson being sued for sexual assault and reportedly wanting out of Houston, Mond would have likely been thrust into the spotlight for a Texans organization that is in complete disarray.

In Minnesota, the Texas A&M product will have ample time to learn under Kirk Cousins before potentially taking over the starting role.

As for Mills, he likely won’t have to worry about playing for the Texans any time soon. Houston still has Watson on the roster, for now, and also signed Tyrod Taylor this offseason, presumably as a backup plan.

If Watson is traded, the Texans should get a first-round pick pending the legal issues, meaning they could get a shot at drafting one of the top quarterbacks in next year’s class, which would push Mills further down the depth chart.
