Texans land two key offensive free agents
The Houston Texans continue to add weapons to their offense in advance of drafting a new quarterback.
Per Ian Rapaport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network, the Texans are reportedly signing former Buffalo Bills running back Devin Singletary and former Dallas Cowboys tight end Dalton Schultz to their roster.
Singletary and Schultz are both signing one-year deals worth $3.75 million and $9 million respectively, according to Aaron Wilson of KPRC Houston.
The Singletary deal creates a great two-punch combo in the backfield, with the former Florida Atlantic standout expected to share carries with Texans’ leading rusher Dameon Pierce, who is coming off an impressive rookie campaign.
Singletary, a 25-year-old, former third-round pick, led the pass-heavy Bills in rushing yards (819) and attempts (177) last season. Pierce, a 2022 fourth-round pick, rushed for 939 yards in 13 games played.
When given the carries, Singletary is a productive running back. In his four seasons with the Bills, he averaged 4.7 yards per carry, and missed only one game in the last three years.
Schultz, who scored five touchdowns for the Cowboys last season, is a great pickup for a Texans team who lost two tight ends—Jordan Akins and O.J. Howard—in free agency.
Despite seeing a drop in targets and receiving yards in 2022, the 26-year-old was ranked second in receiving yards (577) on the team behind CeeDee Lamb.
The Texans are expected to select a quarterback with the No. 2 pick in the NFL Draft on April 27. Whether it’s Bryce Young, C.J. Stroud or Anthony Richardson, the team is loading up their offense with the hopes of a turnaround season.
Along with Singletary and Schultz, the Texans have added wide receivers Robert Woods and Noah Brown to their offense.
Looking at the interior line, the team signed star left tackle Laremy Tunsil to a three-year, $75 million extension on Sunday, making him the highest-paid tackle in NFL history. Last week, the team also acquired two-time Super Bowl champion right guard Shaq Mason from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The Texans have won a combined 11 games over the last three seasons. With new offensive weapons acquired in the offseason, the franchise is looking to build a strong foundation for their rookie quarterback.
