Strong front this week to bring heavy rain and arctic temperatures to San Antonio

After a beautiful weekend filled with sunshine and pleasant temperatures, the rain is expected to return for your Monday.

The National Weather Service reports a chance for showers and thunderstorms for the start of the week. About two to three inches of rain is possible near and east of I-35 and I-37. Areas prone to flooding along those corridors could be imminent. In addition, a strong storm or two could produce hail. The heaviest amounts are expected to fall east of San Antonio, towards Gonzales.

While you may here a rumble of thunder, this system is not expected to be severe. Most of the rain in San Antonio is expected to clear out by lunch time.

A strong cold front will move in Wednesday night, bringing the coldest temperatures to the region this winter thus far, according to the NWS. Freezing conditions are expected Wednesday night and Thursday across the Hill Country and I-35 corridor.

Temperatures are expected to drop to the low 20s Thursday night and Friday night across all South Central Texas producing a hard freeze. The wind chill is forecasted to be in the teens.

There is a potential for a wintry mix of freezing rain and sleet and icy conditions late Wednesday night through Thursday morning, with a greater chance in the Hill Country and a lesser chance as far south as a Del Rio to San Antonio to La Grange line.

The NWS stresses this is not a repeat in severity and impacts of the February 2021 winter storm.

Officials want to remind folks to keep an eye on the weather and prepare for what you feel you might need for a worse case of 48 hours below freezing and potentially light accumulation of wintry precipitation.

Remember, focus on protecting loved ones, pets, plants and pipes.
