Stewart Hagestad holds off Mark Costanza to take 40th U.S. Mid-Amateur at Nantucket’s Sankaty Head

NANTUCKET, Mass. — A picturesque Sankaty Head Golf Club provided the perfect autumn setting for the 40th U.S. Mid-Amateur.

After the morning results on Thursday, Stewart Hagestad and Mark Costanza were the last men standing, and the pair teed off for the first 18 holes of their match at 12:45 p.m.

Costanza’s round started with a pull hook into the hazard down the left side of the first hole at Sankaty Head, and he’d eventually lose the hole after making a double bogey. Hagestad went on a winning spree in the middle of the round, winning six holes in a seven-hole stretch.

Costanza came back on the second nine, and ended the day 5 down.

Friday was a different story. Costanza fought back from the deficit, winning three holes on the front side to make the turn just two down. Costanza, a few holes later, won the par-4 13th with a birdie, closing the lead to 1 down.

After three halved holes in a row, Hagestad won the par-5 17th with a birdie, capturing the 40th U.S. Mid-Amateur, 2 and 1.

Hagestad will take home a gold medal, will take possession of the Robert T. Jones Memorial Trophy for one year, as well as exemptions into the 2022 U.S. Open Championship at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, the 2022 Masters Tournament, the next 10 U.S. Mid-Amateurs and the next two U.S. Amateurs.

Hagestad was the low-am at the 2017 Masters.
