Stephen Jackson thinks Tim Duncan should be the Spurs’ next head coach

He has that championship mentality.

Stuff Stephen Jackson has to say about the Spurs isn’t always popular these days, but some (if not all) of Spurs fans probably agree with his latest statement, at least to an extent: that Tim Duncan should be the Spurs’ next head coach. Speaking to ESPN San Antonio ahead of the Super Bowl, he had the following to say:

“It has to be someone who is comfortable moving over to that next seat and not worrying about their spot. I think it should be Tim Duncan. If Pop decides to step down, it should be somebody the players will respect and comes from their winning culture.

“Tim is only one from that winning culture on that sideline besides Pop. That’s why the team is not winning because they’re used to having winners on the team and there’s nobody to coach through. That’s no diss to the guys on the team. That’s just the truth. None of them are champions.”

This is probably not a point anyone would argue with, although a common reaction afterwards is probably, “What about Becky Hammon?” She definitely has seniority on Duncan as far as official coaching experience and definitely has a winning mentality, even if she lacks a championship on her resume.

Gregg Popovich still has two years left on the three-year contract extension he signed last summer, although that hardly has any bearing on his decision-making process. Duncan has also never indicated he’s interested in becoming a head coach, but then again, no one ever saw him coming out of retirement to be an assistant coach, so you never know.
