Antonio instrumental on Europa League night against Rapid Wein

West Ham United took command of Group H as match day two of the Europa League came to its completion tonight as the Hammers held on to a 1-0 lead against Rapid Wein, with Michail Antonio and Declan Rice helping the west Londoners steal all three points at home.

England international Declan Rice scored the matches lone goal just before the half-hour mark, assisted by Jamaican international Michail Antonio, while the slender lead may just be enough for David Moyes’ men to take six points from six to open their continental campaign on the front foot.

With his assist on the night before being removed on 62-minutes, Antonio registered his fourth assist in all competitions this season. Additionally, his current goal tally of 5-goals in the Premier League is good enough to place him as joint-fifth in the goal charts across Europe’s big-five leagues and level with Jamie Vardy, Vinícius Júnior, Edin Dzeko, Mohamed Salah, and Dimitri Payet.

West Ham frontman on equal terms with Mohamed Salah

The data behind Antonio and his terrific start to 2021-22 is encouraging to say the least if you’re a West Ham supporter. A combined 10-goal contributions in just seven appearances across the Premier League and Europa League signals a brilliant return from a player who many would not have expected that level of return.

And according to OptaJoe, only Liverpool ace Mohamed Salah can boast the same level of return amongst Premier League forwards this season.

Revealed: Data shows Michail Antonio as effective as Mohamed Salah as West Ham swan song continues

In the aftermath of a summer that saw Harry Kane nearly move to Manchester City, Cristiano Ronaldo make his return to Manchester United, Kylian Mbappé nearly swap Paris for Madrid, and Erling Haaland the constant subject of transfer speculation, the swan song perpetrated by Antonio in conjunction with West Ham’s showing its worth is the type of storyline football needs.
