Spurs recall Lonnie Walker, Chimezie Metu from Austin
Is the Spurs’ first round draft pick about to make his NBA debut?
The Spurs have recalled their two 2018 draft picks Lonnie Walker IV and Chimezie Metu from Austin. This is especially exciting regarding Walker, who tore his meniscus during the preseason.
He has been rehabbing in Austin since being given the all-clear to return to the court at the end of November. In nine G-League games he has averaged 14.8 points, 2.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 24.5 minutes per game.
In seven games with Austin, Metu is averaging 15.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.4 blocks in almost 29 minutes. He has also appeared 18 games for the Spurs, averaging 2.4 points and 1.4 rebounds in just under six minutes per game.
It is unclear if they have been recalled just to get some practice with the Spurs, who are on a large break by NBA standards (they don’t play again until a home game against the Denver Nuggets on Wednesday), or if Gregg Popovich believes Walker in particular is ready to make his NBA debut. Here’s to hoping it’s the latter.
