Spurs fans are confident in their offseason moves after a thrilling season opener

The San Antonio Spurs are fresh off a season-opening throttling of the Orlando Magic that sent a jolt of electricity surging throughout the AT&T Center crowd. And while the good guys got the job done behind an all-around team effort, there’s no denying there are much better opponents that lie ahead on the schedule.

But perhaps the Silver and Black can build off their spectacular debut and surprise the NBA while relying on their young core’s undeniable defensive intensity, breakneck pace, and unselfish ball movement. After all, their commitment to those values gave 18-year-old rookie Josh Primo an unexpected chance to make a historic regular-season debut.

Wednesday night was thrilling, and if head coach Gregg Popovich can get this team to replicate those results more often than not, the remaining 81 games are going to be wildly entertaining for Spurs fans. Before we get too ahead of ourselves, San Antonio still has a handful of unanswered questions lingering from an unusually active offseason.

Well, the results are in, and Spurs fans mostly seem onboard with what PATFO have been doing as of late, especially after a resounding victory over the Orlando Magic in their season opener.

Cutting Luka Samanic after drafting him the 19th overall pick just two years ago was among the most stunning and disappointing moves in recent memory. And while it was practically a direct admission by San Antonio that they chose the wrong player in 2019, it also showed their commitment to the championship culture they have tirelessly worked towards building over the last two-plus decades.

A little less than two weeks, Samanic put a metaphorical nail in the coffin on his potentially promising career with the Spurs, intentionally giving up on an opportunity to chase down Cole Anthony with a preseason victory hanging in the balance. That kind of poor effort plagued Luka during his short tenure in the 2-1-0, and 71% of Spurs fans say PATFO made the right decision by waiving the third-year forward.

The Silver and Black also had another huge decision on their hands earlier this offseason as they had the unforgiving task of widdling down a massive talent pool to identify a suitable candidate for just the fifth lottery pick in franchise history. San Antonio ultimately went with Josh Primo, a relatively unheralded Canadian teenager, drawing harsh criticism from the media while sending the fanbase into a frenzy.

But after jaw-dropping flashes of two-way versatility during Summer League and a magnificent preseason debut in which the 18-year-old combo guard dropped 17 points in almost as many minutes, the Spurs faithful quickly began to change their tune. After one regular-season outing, fans are 94% confident that San Antonio made the right choice in drafting Primo with the 12th overall pick.

Changing gears here, nearly 58% of Spurs fans believe the team will snap their two-year playoff drought. There’s no doubt some of that confidence probably stems from their utter dismantling of the Magic this Wednesday, where San Antonio clicked on all cylinders and certainly looked the part of a postseason hopeful. And there’s nothing wrong with showing a bit of optimism, but we’ll check back in on this topic next week.

After decades of giving the basketball to Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili, Kawhi Leonard, LaMarcus Aldridge, or DeMar DeRozan in search of instant offense, the Spurs are now shifting towards a more egalitarian approach. San Antonio doesn’t have a proven go-to scoring option at the moment, but 49% of Spurs fans think Dejounte Murray will lead the team in points per game this season.
