Scores of elite golfers, including Jordan Spieth, Nelly Korda, Hideki Matsuyama, Cameron Davis, Rickie Fowler and Danielle Kang, use heel-toe weighted blade putters made by Scotty Cameron, Titleist’s master craftsman for putters. (Nice job title if you can get it.) Cameron also makes compact mallets like the Phantom X 5.5 that are based on his heel-toe weighted Newport blades, and you will find them in the bags of players like 2021 FedEx champion Patrick Cantlay and Justin Thomas.

On Tuesday, Cameron announced the release of a limited run of 4,000 all-black putters that take the concept of the Phantom X 5.5 a step further. The new Phantom X 9.5 Triple Black putter uses multi-material construction to help golfers achieve a better roll and improved performance on the greens.

Multimaterial construction

The first Phantom X putters were released in March and featured four designs that all have a boosted moment of inertia (MOI) for forgiveness and increased stability on mis-hits. Like those putters, the new Phantom X 9.5 Triple Black has a face and main chassis that is milled from 303 stainless steel for a soft feel at impact.

Using aluminum instead of steel in the center of the head increases the stability. (Titleist)

However, between the extended heel and toe areas, Cameron has designed a 6061 aluminum flange. It is significantly lighter than the steel, which pushes more of the head’s weight to the perimeter to further increase the MOI. So, while the head size is not as large as many high-MOI mallets, the Phantom X 9.5 Triple Black provides high-MOI performance.

The shape

In the address position, the Phantom X 9.5 Triple Black has a very similar look to the Phantom X 5.5 that Cantlay and Thomas use, but while there is nothing between the fang-style extensions on their putters, the center is filled in on the Phantom X 9.5 Triple Black. The center aluminum piece lifts up, above the heel and toe extensions, and it has a U-shaped design on it that brackets the ball when you set the putter behind it.

To further help golfers with alignment, Cameron has added three red dots to the topline.

The hosel has been designed with a short slant neck, so the Phantom X 9.5 Triple Black will have blade-style toe hang and be ideally suited for golfers who tend to have an arched putting style.

The finish

The adjustable weights in the sole are the only feature not given a matte-black finish. (Titleist)

The 303 stainless steel and the aluminum have both been misted in anodized black with a glare-reducing black finish, but the stainless steel weights still have a silver-toned chrome finish.
