San Francisco 49ers: NFL Insider Reveals Why The Team Didn’t Trade Trey Lance

The San Francisco 49ers have an interesting situation, to say the least with quarterback Trey Lance. The team gave up a king’s ransom in order to trade up and select him third overall. He sat for a year which isn’t unheard of but a broken ankle ended his season prematurely. Brock Purdy then took the team by storm and has the public support of the coach and front office. Many wondered if Lance would be on the move but NFL insider Adan Schefter revealed why the team didn’t trade him.

San Francisco 49ers Trey Lance: Why Didn’t A Trade Happen?

Schefter appeared on the Pat McAfee Show and quoted a report by David Bonilla of 49ers WebZone.

“There was no trade market, and (head coach) Kyle Shanahan has said that they didn’t have any trade talks with teams. He’s not going anywhere right now. He’s there.”

He is still a 49er because no team wanted to roll the dice on a quarterback that has not played a lot in the past three years. Lance is a complete unknown. He has shown flashes and the athletic ability is there but no one truly knows what kind of quarterback he can be.

What Should They Do?

I don’t hate hanging onto Lance. He is on a rookie contract and if something were to happen to Purdy or Sam Darnold, Lance is certainly a better option than a lot of teams have. The issue with keeping him on the bench is his trade value will continue to go down if he doesn’t play. If he isn’t good enough to beat our Brock Purdy, why should a team give up premium draft capital in order to get him? Also, we are nearing rookie extension time. Are the 49ers going to re-sign him to a big deal? If not, another team could just play the waiting game and get him on the open market.

The San Francisco 49ers will have to make a decision at some point about Trey Lance. It does not seem like it is going to happen this summer as the market isn’t there.
