San Francisco 49ers: GM John Lynch Isn’t Worried About The Nick Bosa Extension

The San Francisco 49ers hit a home run when they picked Nick Bosa. He has been a dominant force on the defensive line and is due for an extension. The second overall pick in the 2019 draft will likely reset the market when it comes to defensive players. However, a deal has not been done yet, and with the Lamar Jackson situation, fans are becoming worried about whether a deal will get done. General manager John Lynch isn’t worried about getting an extension done.

San Francisco 49ers: Nick Bosa Extension

Bosa is coming off a season where he led the league in sacks and won Defensive Player of the Year. His stats are off the charts. He has 43 sacks in just 51 career games. On top of that, he has 8 forced fumbles and 56 tackles for loss. He has been a huge part of leading the 49ers to back-to-back NFC Championship game appearances. GM John Lynch had this to say about the contract talks.

“He’s a really good player who’s going to get everything that he’s earned and deserves, and I do like our track record of getting [extensions] done,” Lynch said, adding on the subject of a potential timeline that, “they don’t come as quick as you’d like sometimes … And this one, I don’t know where that would be. I don’t think that has to be the case, but we’ll see where it goes.”

The 49ers have taken care of their own in the past. They navigated the Deebo Samuel situation are were able to bring him back. I would expect that they would be able to do the same with Bosa.

How Much Will He Get?

At just 25 years old, Bosa is likely to get a whole lot of money. The highest-paid defensive players are TJ Watt ($28 million a year) and Aaron Donald ($31.6 million per year). I would expect those numbers to be dwarfed by the Nick Bosa extension. This is a player who is enterting his prime and should continue to anchor this defense for years to come.

It’s great to have players like this on rookie deals but the time comes to extend them eventually. The San Francisco 49ers have to love that Brock Purdy showed he can be a starter so they can avoid paying a quarterback big money for awhile.
