San Antonio’s summer has been filled with thunderstorms and other unusual weather events. This week, however, the Alamo City is expected to get a heavy dose of traditional summer temps. With heat indexes are expected to reach up to 100 degrees in the coming days, the City of San Antonio is opening cooling centers across the region.

Heat indexes through Saturday, July 31, may reach between 100 and 103 degrees, according to the latest forecast. Higher temperatures puts vulnerable individuals like adults aged 65 and older, children 4 and younger, and those with existing medical conditions at risk, especially if they don’t have access to air conditioning.

That’s exactly why the city is opening cooling centers across the city this week. Most cooling centers are within Loop 410, though more than a dozen are outside the loop. Some centers are even located outside Loop 1604 so that Bexar County residents can stay cool as well.

Cooling centers can be found at select local libraries, community centers, senior centers, fire stations, and churches. A full list of cooling centers can be found here.

In addition to visiting cooling centers, the city is reminding residents to drink plenty of water and protect themselves from the sun. If you have a neighbor in the vulnerable category, officials encourage you to check in on them to make sure they’re hydrated and staying cool.

If residents don’t stay cool, they can suffer with heat cramps, heat exhaustion, or even heat stroke. Warning signs to look out for include red, hot, and moist (or dry) skin; no sweating; a strong pulse (or slow, weak pulse); nausea; confusion; or strange behavior. Children with these signs should be doused in cool water.
