San Antonio, World Central Kitchens pop up in Uvalde to feed community

As the community of Uvalde continues to recover from the May 24 Robb Elementary School shooting, World Central Kitchen along with other restaurants from San Antonio are stepping up to help by feeding people in need.

According to a Facebook post, World Central Kitchen popped up in Uvalde Saturday to serve the community a mix of Mexican cuisine favorites. The meals and other food items given out included beef fajitas, rice, beans, pico de gallo, grilled jalapeños, breakfast tacos, and even a range of aguas frescas. Residents had the option to eat their food outside the mobile kitchen or take their meal home.

Cappy Lawton and executive chef Gabriel Ibarra along with a team of staff members from the Cappy’s Restaurants group (that includes Mama’s Cafe, Cappy’s, Cappyccino’s and La Fonda on Main partnered with WCK and cooked 1,000 meals between Friday and Saturday.

This is not uncommon for the globe-trotting pop-up kitchen organization. World Central Kitchen began in 2010 after chef Jose Andres went to Haiti following an earthquake that devastated the small island country, according to the World Central Kitchen website. The organization has helped people across the globe who have been affected by disasters and other trying times, such as hurricanes, the COVID-19 pandemic, brush fires and most recently Ukraine, to name a few.

Uvalde resident Sunjin Contreras hands out free strawberry-banana smoothie while volunteering with World Central Kitchen and El Juice Bar, a San-Antonio based food truck owned by Andrew Mora, on the corner of West Garden and South Getty Streets in Uvalde, Texas, Saturday, May 28, 2022. Several San Antonio restaurants and food trucks, including Rosa’s Kitchen and Lawton Family of Restaurants, have teamed up with World Central Kitchen, an organization devoted to providing meals in the wake of disasters, to give out free food to the Uvalde community throughout Memorial Day weekend.

San Antonio institutions are also finding ways to help the affected families however they can. A local snack spot found a more health-conscious way to give back to the devastated community.

El Juice Bar SA 210 will be providing “comforting healthy treats” to residents over the next few days, meaning the San Antonio shop will be closed throughout the busy Memorial Day weekend, according to an Instagram post.
