San Antonio police officer shoots, kills man outside Westside motel
A San Antonio police officer shot and killed a man outside a motel on the city’s Westside late Tuesday, January 24, according to police. San Antonio Police Department Chief William McManus said at the scene the man allegedly pulled out a gun and fired at officers.
The shooting occurred just before 11 p.m. in the parking lot of Motel 6 in the 2100 block of SW Loop 410, near Marbach Road and Hwy. 90. McManus said the Street Crimes Unit had been patrolling the area near the motel. They pulled into the parking lot and noticed a man near a van, McManus said.
Officers said they saw a man who appeared to have drugs in his hand. McManus said that police officers stopped, contacted the individual in question and attempted to handcuff the man. That’s when, McManus said, the man allegedly pushed away, pulled a handgun from his waist and fired at least two rounds at the officers.
Police returned fire and fatally shot the man in the upper torso, McManus said. The man who was shot was in his late 40s or 50s, and the identity of the man who was killed has not been released as of this stories publication.
The officer who shot and killed the man has been with the department for five years, police said. He will be placed on administrative duty until an investigation is complete.
This officer-involved shooting is SAPD’s second one this month. On January 4, SAPD shot a man several times after he allegedly threatened an officer with a gun at a Northwest Side hotel. The 44-year-old man was in critical condition, according to SAPD.
