San Antonio has finally finished 2017 bond funded upgrades to an intersection near Alamo Heights that the city says will relieve decades of traffic headaches. The Single Point Urban Interchange (SPUI) at the intersection of Austin Highway and Harry Wurzbach will fully open to the public on Tuesday, January 17, according to a news release.

City officials say the upgrades will make navigating the intersection easier for drivers. A SPUI will essentially allow for easier control of traffic from people trying to get on or off Austin Highway from Harry Wurzbach using traffic signals. The 2017 bond set aside $3 million for this joint project with TxDOT.

You can watch an example of a SPUI in a video from TxDOT below.

The SPUI eliminates the wait for left hand turn signals will now let drivers in opposing directions to turn left simultaneously. The traffic signals will also allow for more green light time than red light time.

Austin Highway is now an overpass at Harry Wurzbach.

“Anyone who has lived in San Antonio for any significant time knows how difficult it was to drive from Austin Highway and try to access Harry Wurzbach,” says San Antonio City Manager Erik Walsh in the news release.

Austin Highway will now also be an overpass to allow North and South traffic on Harry Wurzbach to flow freely underneath, eliminating the wait times at traffic signals that most drivers were used to for decades. This will be the first SPUI in San Antonio.
