Honking your car horn in San Antonio is usually a tradition after big Spurs victories, but the tradition has been extended to birthdays in the coronavirus era in a city that never skimps on celebration.

On Thursday, a South Side resident named Mrs. Susie, was the belle of the drive-by ball for her 103rd birthday. Families nationwide have adjusted celebrating special occasions under social distancing orders by coordinating honking parades that go past the homes of their loved ones.

Mrs. Susie’s admirers put a San Antonio twist on the celebration with Las Mañanitas blaring from the cars as she waved from her front porch.

Some of her family members stepped out of their vehicles and removed their face masks to blow kisses to the birthday girl from their sidewalk.

As one mySA reader pointed out, Mrs. Susie was an infant the last time a pandemic swept through the nation in 1918, when the Spanish Flu killed millions.

“Just to think about all she has seen from then to now,” Twitter user @ryan102857 said.
